Bullying

Bullying has occurred since the beginning of time. That doesn't mean it's ok. Unless we have open discussions and work together to minimize bullying (in the hopes of eradicating it), it will continue for the next generations. This week I held an open discussion at Panera regarding bullying, and one parent attended. We discussed procedures, regulations, impact on our children and families, and ideas to get people involved in solutions. I strongly believe the PTOs should take this up and form a bullying ambassadorship. This person would act as a liaison between many local organizations that support victims of bullying and raise mental health awareness. This person would also keep the school board informed of incidents and red flags when the system is not working.

Secondly, I think we need to evaluate our standard operating procedures for bullying at FR. We have tremendous resources and a great foundation, but there seems to be a disconnect somewhere. Only with a thorough evaluation can we uncover this disconnect. I know teachers and administrators are 100% dedicated to protecting our children from harm. We must work together to ensure our procedures are working, victims' needs are addressed, and bullies are educated on appropriate behavior.

Third, I believe in empowering students. Students should feel in control of their own environment. If a student feels like they have no control over their environment, learning becomes very difficult. Students shouldn't feel afraid to speak up, to defend themselves, and to seek help. Many people have reached out to me regarding this issue, and I've learned a lot. FR has the structure and framework to empower our learners, but I don't think parents and students know where to find these resources. One resource parents and children can turn to is called "Safe 2 Say": https://www.safe2saypa.org/.

This organization gives victims and bystanders a voice. Franklin Regional participates in this program and has the website link posted on the front page of the Franklin Regional website. This is a reporting portal much like a child abuse hotline works. The Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General follows up on the incident to insure the problem is being handled and rectified. Please check it out and use it!

Finally, the following is a list of resources that provides direction for all stakeholders, parents, students, teachers and staff, administrators, and all concerned citizens. I've also attached our meeting notes from this week. As always, please reach out to me with any of your concerns. I will always listen and try to help.

List of resources

Safe2Say

Reporting website run by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The staff follow up with the school districts on all reported incidents. The reports are anonymous, but you have the option of being called with updates. Franklin Regional is an active participant in this program.

Westmoreland Step Up

Our own Dr. Piraino was the impetus for creating this program and speaks for his dedication to this issue and our children's safety. COVID-19 has challenged more than just our test scores and learning. The virus has devastated our country's mental health, in adults AND children. Now, more than ever, we need to be aware of red flags. I'd love to see active support and leadership from FR at this tremendous resource that our own has initiated.

OLWEUS

This is a K12 program which requires all employees of the school to have regular training and participation in. Students from kindergarten start learning about bullying, preventing bullying, and are empowered with actions they can take to minimize the impact of bullying. The program is evidence based and highly regarded. They have a parent portal that supports parents with their challenges.

Very Well Family

Several articles written from each perspective, the victim, the bully, the educator, and the parent. Excellent advice for all.
